Evaluation of Antalya Bus Station Information Element Designs in terms of Visual Aesthetic Quality

Abstract

A The concept of information, known as information expansion, has been at the forefront in terms of the needs of societies from the past to the present. Recently, especially with the development of technological facilities, the importance of information design systems has increased considerably. Information and guidance elements exist in every field of social use, enabling the transfer of information; It is an important element in providing interaction for information and orientation within the spaces and gaining the functional and visual aesthetic appreciation of people with effective visual communication tools. As a social use, bus station structures also stand out as an important public space in the design of information and guidance elements. Within the scope of the study, focusing on the informatics language of bus station structures; It is aimed to determine the signage systems in the building through the example of Antalya Bus Station and to evaluate these designs in the context of graphic design space. In the evaluation of the identified signage systems, semi-structured interview techniques and descriptive analysis methods were used. In the first stage of the study, passenger, and employee opinions about the information-guidance qualities of the existing signage systems were taken. Within the scope of the interview data obtained, signage systems were evaluated by making descriptive analyses in the context of design elements and design principles as information-guidance design components determined in the existing literature. As a result of the evaluations, it was seen that most of the signage systems in the bus station structure were insufficient in terms of functional and visual aesthetic quality and that identity was not given to the bus station space and the city. As a method criterion, the study is expected to be a source for researchers from many disciplines that are active in the information and guidance design of bus station structures with approaches and elements appropriate to the identity of the city.

Mikail Açıkel, Akdeniz University

Mikail Açıkel, graduated from Karadeniz Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Interior Architecture in 2014. He completed his master's degree at Akdeniz University Faculty of Architecture in 2019. He still works as a research assistant at the same university and continues his doctoral studies.

Yavuz Bahadır Certel, Akdeniz University

Yavuz Bahadır CERTEL, Yavuz Bahadır CERTEL graduated from Ankara Gazi University, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture in 2012. He worked in various project offices and international construction projects for seven years. In 2019, he completed his master's degree at Süleyman Demirel University. Since 2022, he has been working as research assistant at Akdeniz University Faculty of Architecture and continues his doctoral studies.

İbrahim Bakır, Akdeniz University

İbrahim BAKIR, graduated from Konya State Engineering and Architectural Academy in 1980. Between 1980-1983, he worked as the director of development in Bucak Municipality. He started his academic career as a research assistant at Selçuk University in 1983. He completed his master's degree in 1986. He earned his doctorate degree with dissertation that was titled “An Essay for Solving the Problems of Settlement and Space of the Western Taurus Nomads” in 1996. He continues his academic career at Akdeniz University, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture.

Hacer Mutlu Danacı, Akdeniz University

Hacer MUTLU DANACI, graduated from Yıldız Technical University (YTU) Architectural Department in Istanbul in 1993. She gained a wide range of expensive while working on architectural projects for several offices specializing in general architecture and interior design. She benefited from the experience, acquired when she opened her own architectural office in 1999. She started her Master’s education in 2004, studying Landscape Planning at Yıldız Technical University and, transferred to Akdeniz University in 2004, and was awarded her MA in 2007 in visual analysis and environmental aesthetics and, awarded her PhD in 2012 in the cultural landscape and vernacular architecture. In 2005, she was educated in Belgium at the “Erasmushogeschool, Environment and Garden Landscape Architecture. She is still studying in the architectural department at Akdeniz University. She has a lot of articles about architectural education, visual analysis, environmental aesthetic, ecology and nanotechnology, cultural landscape and vernacular architecture.

Kemal Reha Kavas, Akdeniz University

Kemal Reha KAVAS, Received his B.Arch (2002) and M.Arch (2005) degrees from the Department of Architecture at METU (Middle East Technical University), his Ph.D. in History of Architecture from METU in 2009. Received the 2009 “Thesis of the Year Award” by Prof. Dr. Mustafa N. Parlar Association for Education and Research. Currently works as professor at Akdeniz University Faculty of Architecture in Antalya. Major research interests include theory and historiography of architecture, environmental aesthetics and vernacular architecture.
