Abstract

Discourses on woman/space relations boomed in the 90s. The fundamental reason was to give support to the Feminist Movement. This trend which has had feeble effect on architectural design remained controversial. The comprehensive research expounded in this article which was based on an open-ended questionnaire that targeted at determining the gender roles at home, applied to female subjects who simulated the national demographics, clearly demonstrated that the home experience of an average Turkish woman basically consists of kitchens; the female who runs the house does not really have a place for herself at home. However she does not perceive her restrained, secondary role an issue worthy of struggling to change and she grants spaces for recreation and study to the male. The well-established civil laws conducive for equality has not changed this disturbing situation and do not seem to do so in the near future.

Şengül Öymen Gür, Beykent University, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Department of Architecture, İstanbul

Şengül Öymen Gür, 40 yıl KTÜ’ye hizmet vermiş olup halen Beykent Üniversitesi öğretim üyesidir. 1964 yılında TED Ankara Kolejinden, 1970 yılında KTÜ Mimarlık Fakültesinden, 1978 yılında Pennsylvania Üniversitesi’nden PhD unvanıyla mezun olmuştur. Gür, IAPS, DRS, CIB, W84, WA, CICA, vb üyesi ve BTI’nın ve The Sustainable Environment Association [SEA]’nın onur üyesidir. Anadolu Üniversitesi Bilim ve Teknoloji Dergisinin ve Eğitim Teknolojisi Dergisinin, Beykent FBE dergisinin editörlüğünü, World Architecture’ın bölge editörlüğünü, Ebooks, Design Studies, JADE, JAAB, SRE, Megaron, Gazi ve Trakya Üniversitesi dergilerinin hakemliğini yapmaktadır. 20 adet kitabı, 350 civarında yayını olan Gür, 1972-77 yılları arasında Fulbright, 2002 ve 2008 yılında DAAD burslarına layık görülmüş olup 2008 yılında Mimarlık Vakfı Araştırma Ödülünü kazanmıştır.

Şengül Yalçınkaya Erol, 2001 yılında K.T.Ü. Mimarlık Fakültesi’nden mezun oldu. 2011 yılında K.T.Ü. Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü’nde Mimarlık Anabilim Dalı, Bina Bilgisi kürsüsünde doktorasını tamamladı. Şu an K.T.Ü İç Mimarlık Bölümü’nde öğretim üyesidir. Çevre psikolojisi alanında çalışmalarına devam etmektedir
