Mapping the Evolution of Interior Architecture and Interior Design: A VOSviewer-Based Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract

This study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis to explore the academic evolution of interior architecture and interior design literature from 1975 to 2024 using the Web of Science (WoS) database. A total of 3,695 articles were analyzed through VOSviewer software to visualize and interpret research trends, citation networks, co-authorship clusters, and thematic keyword occurrences. The findings indicate a steady growth in publications, particularly after 2006, coinciding with the increasing emphasis on digitalization and sustainability in design. Prominent research themes include biophilic design, adaptive reuse, and the psychological effects of color and space. The dominance of English-language publications is evident, though contributions in Turkish, French, and Spanish are also recognized. Citation analyses identify influential studies that link technical developments with social and psychological perspectives in design. Thematic clustering highlights the interdisciplinary expansion of the field, integrating insights from environmental psychology, ergonomics, and emerging digital technologies such as virtual and augmented reality. This study contributes to the literature by offering a clear roadmap for future research, promoting international collaboration, and strengthening the link between academic inquiry and design practice.

İlhami Ay, Hakkari University

İlhami Ay is an Assistant Professor at Hakkari University. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Department of Architecture at Gaziantep University in 2017, his master’s degree from the Department of Architecture at Hasan Kalyoncu University in 2019, and his Ph.D. from the Department of Architecture at Dicle University in 2025. His academic studies mainly focus on prefabricated structures, stone deterioration in historical buildings, and bibliometric analysis. In addition, he has conducted research in various interdisciplinary fields, including occupational health and safety, biophilia, BREEAM, radiation, and building materials. Ay has published articles, book chapters, and conference papers in these fields, and he has also served as an editor for academic books.

Murat Dal, Munzur University

Murat Dal is a Professor at Munzur University. He has numerous academic works in the field of architecture, including articles, books, conference papers, and book chapters. In addition, he has served as the editor of many academic books. Alongside his scholarly publications, Dal has also undertaken various academic and organizational responsibilities, including serving as chair of congresses.
